SCMC Reminder

A little reminder about our meeting this week.

Do you want SCMC to host AMVIV in 2012? Well, speak up! here’s your chance! The meeting is Thursday, July 14 at 6:30pm, at Connie and Ladd’s Clubhouse. Just three items on the agenda, folks -

1) If the Club will host AMVIV9 in 2012
2) When will AMVIV9 be held?
3) Who will be the principal organizers?

If you can make it, great! We’ll see you there. If you can’t make it, please let us know your opinions.

We’re not asking you to commit to any organizing at this time. We just want to know whether or not you want the Club to sponsor this event in 2012.

If we don’t hear anything at all from you, we will have to assume that you no longer support the event, and would prefer the Club NOT host it. So please, if you can’t make it, let us know your thoughts on the matter.

We also have a small update for you – We’re moving the Mt Charleston Picnic to Sunday, July 17. Club members will meet at Santa Fe Station at 11:00AM in the northeast side of the parking lot just to the right from the main entrance on Rancho. Santa Fe’s address is 4949 N. Rancho Dr. LV, NV 89130. We will motor up the mountain (leaving the Santa Fe at 11:30AM) for a short drive and have a picnic. This will be a potluck as it has been in years past; the club will provide burgers and hot dogs. If you could e-mail Chris and let him know what you are bringing to share as a side, he will inform the rest of the club with a list of what everyone is bringing. Chris will be sending out an email a little later to let us know the rest of the details, so be sure to keep an eye on your Inbox.

A MINI Vacation In Vegas 8 Is Here

After months of meetings and preparation, the time has finally come. The festivities start today at 3pm when Registration for AMVIV8 opens.

Many of you volunteered to help during the weekend, for which we are grateful. The Club booth will be located in the Motoring Midway, on the 5th floor of the parking garage - with all of the vendors. If you are new to the MINI community or have some free time on your hands this weekend, feel free to drop by anytime. This is perfect time to see what sorts of products and services are available to you. And if you wanted to help with the booth - there could be an opportunity for that as well. As with anything, people’s schedules can change at the last minute and sometimes folks can’t be there as scheduled. Also, if you want to slip in and give someone a break to catch a bite to eat, I am sure they would welcome the respite.

For those of you looking to go on some runs, there are four scheduled during the weekend all leaving from the roof of the parking garage at Palace Station: Oatman/Kingman on Thursday leaving at 8am, Death Valley on Friday leaving at 8:30am and the infamous Strip Cruise leaves at 7:30pm, Charleston on Saturday leaving at 1pm, and Amboy on Sunday leaving at 9am.

There is an early bird Slots Tournament for attendees tonite starting at 7:30pm, and on Friday there is a Poker Tournament for attendees starting at 3:00pm.

Saturday morning from 8am-11am Cars and Coffee, 9500 S Eastern Ave., is hosting the annual all MINI Show and Shine Benefit Car Show for S.A.F.E. House. Saturday evening will bring the Main Event - The Party At The Palace.

Finally, on Sunday there will be an SCCA Autocross starting at 7am, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Dirt Track Paddock, also known as the U-Drift location. Sunday brunch at Shakespeare’s Grille & Bar at 9:30 is also on the agenda.

I know the weather looks a little wonky, but I think that wind is blowing the cold and nastiness away. I read that the weekend is supposed to be FINE!

We’ve got folks coming to town from all over the country in their shiny MINIs - Alaska, Kansas, Florida, Connecticut, Mississippi, Illinois, Minnesota, North and South Carolina, Washington, Oregon, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Wyoming, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona; even a few from Canada. Come on down and say Hi!

Club Update for 4/15

First off – we have a bit of a conflict with our planned Route 66 Fun Run for April 30th. For those of you that don’t know, The Laughlin River Run is one of the biggest annual motorcycle rallies in Nevada. Our scheduled run and the Laughlin River Run are the same weekend. Oatman will probably be overrun with bikers on that Saturday. We might be rescheduling our April 30th run to just go to Kingman for the car show, or may put in a stop in Chloride, and avoid the Laughlin areas. Or we might just pick a different weekend entirely, so that the run would still be a test run for the AMVIV run. We will keep you posted on this. Of course, we can still go the planned route, and just deal with all the motorcycles when we stop. After all, its a Saturday - what else do we have to do? It would make the drive interesting. If any of you have any thoughts on this, we’d be happy to hear them.

Next up, one of our members sent me an email this week about the Shakespeare’s Grille and Pub in Henderson, 790 Coronado Center Dr. #130. On their schedule of events, they include Mini Cooper Sundays. This is a weekly invite to Mini Coopers in the valley (new and classic) to come and hang out for the day. They’ll be open for brunch, with special brunch prices and drink specials. I’ll be headed over this Sunday to see what it’s all about, if you’ve got some time, let’s do brunch.

Our next Motor In will be Wednesday, April 20, 6:30pm, at Grind Burger, 360 E Tropicana. Here’s a link to their menu: http://grindburgers.com/menu.html

Our next AMVIV Planning Meeting is Thursday, April 21, 6:30pm at The Clubhouse, 4803 Mojave Road.

Remember that group of French Classic Mini Coopers heading to the US to cruise Route 66? This trip is planned for 3 weeks. Thursday, April 21 to Sunday, May 15, 2011. I have the Western portion of their itinerary - if you’d like it, let me know. I thought it might be fun if the Club met up with them during their trip, either to ride along for a while along their route or just around Vegas – or maybe just to have a meal or something.

For those of you interested in special edition MINIs, MINI is producing the MINI Clubman Hampton Design. See the MINI Clubman Hampton later this month at Desert MINI of Las Vegas, or get a sneak peak in The Desert MINI Lounge on Facebook.

Have you heard about the new Fiat 500, and their marketing efforts attempt to compare it to the MINI Cooper? If you don’t follow them as regularly as you might like, White Roof Radio talked about this on their show this week. If you’d like to catch both sides of this argument, check out their podcast on iTunes, or follow this weblink for Woofcast #375: http://www.whiteroofradio.com/woofcast-375/

Interested in a custom license plate frame? Please check out this web site gourmetlicenseframes.com Several of the designs fit and look great on the Mini Coopers. He said he’d be glad to design a custom frame for our group and forgo a design fee with a minimum order of 10 (shipping will be less that way too). They would also make great gifts or awards, if we were so inclined. Let me know if any of you are interested.

SCMC Run April 3 - Back to Furnace Creek

This month the SCMC was invited to join Cars and Coffee on their April Cruise, Sunday, April 3 - The Death Valley and Furnace Creek Brunch drive. Hoping for some better weather this time around. If we’re lucky, all the rain will create a beautiful palate of wild flowers along our route through the deserted roads of the majestic Death Valley. We will end the cruise for a scrumptious brunch at the world famous Furnace Creek Resort (www.furnacecreekresort.com ). The cost of the brunch is about $22 plus tax and gratuity. We will depart promptly from the Gas station on the SE corner of 159 and 160 (Blue Diamond) at 8:30 AM. Please arrive early so we have our driver’s meeting at 8:45 AM. After brunch, we can decide within our own MINI group when we’d like to head back.

Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to come.

SCMC Run to Amboy - Sunday, March 20

The Sin City MINI Club is headed out into the desert this Sunday, for a run to Amboy. For those of you that don’t know, Amboy is a small town in San Bernardino County – situated along Route 66 in the Mojave Desert, and home to the famous “Roy’s Motel and Café”. If you saw the animated feature “Cars” – the fictional town Radiator Springs was loosely based on this little gem of a stop.

We will be meeting at the Las Vegas Outlet Mall on the southern end of The Strip, in the parking lot behind McDonald’s at 8:30am. We’ll leave PROMPTLY at 9:00am. Most likely our first bathroom break will be at Kelso – so we can wander around the former railroad depot. We’ll stop in Ludlow for lunch at the Ludlow Café (yes, it’s still open, I called and checked). From Ludlow, we’ll head over to Amboy, and stop for bit to get some photos around the place. On the way back, we’ll make another restroom stop at Searchlight and we’re scheduled to arrive back in Las Vegas by 5pm.

Hope to see you there!

Rider’s Choice: St. Patrick’s Day Rally or The Valley of Fire

The Club got two invites for this weekend. The St. Patrick’s Day Rally with the British Auto Club, and a ride through The Valley of Fire with the Cars and Coffee Group.

As I mentioned earlier, its best to make the St. Patrick’s Day Rally with a co-pilot – someone to help you find places on the list and generally help you navigate. There are folks in the Club that are probably interested in attending but don’t necessarily have someone to take with them on the run. If you are interested in participating, but need someone to join you, you’ve got a couple options.

The first and easiest is to just show up Sunday at The Original Pancake House at 4833 West Charleston Blvd at 8:30 and sort it out there.

The second is to either post your comments here or on Facebook, (or you can email me) letting people know you need a co-pilot, or would like to be a co-pilot.

If you’re not interested in the St. Pat’s Rally – you can always accept the invitation from the Cars and Coffee group, and head out for a drive to the valley of Fire and lunch at Montelago Village.

The weather looks outstanding for Sunday - either option will definitely be a good time. Hope to see you this weekend.

REMINDER: SCMC February Run, 2/20 - Death Valley and Furnace Creek

This month for our monthly run, the SCMC will be joining Cars and Coffee on their February Cruise, Sunday, February 20 - The Death Valley and Furnace Creek Brunch drive. Please arrive early so we have our driver’s meeting at 8:15 AM.

The ride will take ROUGHLY 2.5 hours each way. We will ride there as a group and have brunch once we get there. The trip back is rather open at this point. Several Club members have expressed a concern about how late we will return. We can certainly decide within our own group when we are ready to return. I don’t anticipate staying in Death Valley for much longer than an hour and a half.
