Au Revoir

I just wanted to send a big thank you to everyone that came out last night - Pedro & John, Jeffrey & Annette (and that beautiful Camero SS), Dave & Chris, Bill & Katrina, and Lisa. We met with some of the French party for dinner at The M Resort/Casino. The visitors really liked the Camaro - real American muscle isn’t as prevalent over there, and they enjoyed the treat.

As luck would have it, flexibility was the order of the evening. We met up on the rooftop and of course the weather was iffy. Then we went inside to the buffet, and they couldn’t accommodate us as quickly as we needed so our group wandered over to the Hash House A Go Go. Anyone that has eaten there knows the portion sizes are comparable to buffet size, so it wasn’t too much of a departure. The food was great, if a little plentiful - and I think everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the crab cakes and they were yummy!!

Afterward, Jeffrey and the Camaro performed a little bit for us on that great big rooftop, and the French enjoyed that immensely. Of course, so did we! Afterward a few of us took our visitors back to The Stratosphere. We cruised down to Town Square to explore the area a bit, then up The Strip to enjoy the lights and sights.

What an incredible story they’ll have to tell their friends when they return home on Saturday! They are off to Death Valley today and eventually will make their way down to Long Beach to put the classics back into containers to make the long trip back to France. They wanted me to tell everyone they had a great time meeting us and hope someday to come out again.

Thank you again to everyone that came out these past two days. It was a lot of fun!!

French Classic Minis in Las Vegas

I have been emailing you about this for months - and finally ils sont arrivés (they have arrived!) We had some fun yesterday with our French classic Mini owner visitors… They tell me they are having a great visit, riding along Route 66 and seeing our country. We met them at Kelso Dunes, and had a blast swapping car keys and tearing up the road. Those little cars are soooo much fun!!! But then, we knew that Thanks to Nancy, Toni, Jennifer, and Karen for making the trip out with me.

After that, we rode to Baker and had Gyros and shakes at The Mad Greek and bought some lottery tickets. Then we rode to Vegas along the 1-15, watching the crazy traffic headed back to California – isn’t it so ice that they come every weekend to deposit their cash? Ha ha ha

When we got to Primm, we met more MINIs from the SCMC and caravanned into Sloan. A big shout out to Pedro & John, Tom, Lisa, and Julius & Crystal: they weathered that crazy Sunday highway traffic, brave souls! In Sloan we met Annette, Jeffrey and Monty (one of our Club Classics) along the very windswept Las Vegas Blvd and did The Strip Cruise. So much fun! I think there were 12 of us by that time and we didn’t lose anyone on the Cruise. Even managed to stop at the Welcome sign for a quick picture before moving along. Sometimes things workout better when no planning is involved. Who knew? Later that evening, we went to Queen Victoria’s Pub at The Riviera and had a cocktail before taking them back to their hotel. A good time was had by all.

Today is their last day in town. They are at Hoover Dam now, and will be going to Lake Mead for a picnic. After that they plan to continue tourist duties and do a sort of casino crawl down The Strip. I will be joining them, and Facebooking if anyone is in the neighborhood, perhaps we can hook up.

Tonight for dinner is a little different than previously reported. They had mentioned doing BBQ for dinner, but that means something a little bit different to them, than to us. We think of going out for BBQ at a restaurant. They think go to the grocery store, buy the meat and fixings and have a cook out. So… no BBQ.

Instead, at 7pm we will be meeting on the rooftop of the parking garage at the M Casino, and going to their buffet. I believe the cost is $23 per person, plus tax and gratuity ($17 for children, and free for kids under 5) … There are 12 people in their party. I plan to call the M today to let them know we are coming. I could really use an RSVP from anyone interested in joining them for dinner, so let me know

SCMC News for 5/6

** A MINI Vacation In Vegas 8 (AMVIV8 for short) is almost here! Our bag stuffing event is next weekend, Saturday, May 14, starting at 9:00am at The Clubhouse, 4803 Mojave Drive. This is where we stuff the attendee registration and vendor goodie bags. If you have the time, we could really use all hands for this one. The more Club members come in to help, the faster the morning goes. We’ll be having bagels and coffee for breakfast, and pizza for lunch. For those of you curious about the schedule of events for the weekend – here’s the link:

** French Classic Mini Visitors – World Mini Raid are almost here! There is a group of French travelers, who brought their Minis over from Europe to drive Route 66 from coast to coast. They are set to arrive in Vegas on this Sunday May 8th at about 6pm. Their schedule indicates they will be leaving needles at 8am and here is the rest of their day:
- 9:45-10:15 : Kelso Dunes
- 12:00-1:30 : Pic-nic at Hole in the Wall
- 4:15-4:45 : Gas station at Statelin Service (near the Nothern exit of Mojave National Preserve)
- 5:30 : arrival at Las Vegas Blvd
- 6:00 : arrival at our hotel (Stratosphere)
I am thinking about meeting them at Needles at 8am… or maybe Kelso at 9:45am and was curious if anyone was available and interested in joining me. Looks like they’ll be having dinner at Roxy’s Diner (Stratosphere) on Sunday night but wanting some BBQ on Monday night. In considering budget (I imagine this has been an expensive trip for them), I would like to setup dinner on Monday evening at Famous Dave’s on Blue Diamond. We could meet them at the Stratosphere and perhaps take a ride up The Strip with all of our Minis and MINIs to get to Blue Diamond and Famous Dave’s . Let me know if you are interested, as I will need to call the restaurant ahead of time to let them how many people are coming.

** Toni let me know that Nellis Air Force is hosting a F-22 Raptor public visit this weekend, if folks are interested in checking it out, we can go from Cars and Coffee. Just let me know if this sounds interesting to you, so I can pass along a number of interested folks to Toni.

** This weekend we have our regular activities on the schedule: Our monthly Cars and Coffee stop on Saturday morning, and brunch on Sunday at Shakespeare’s (if you’re not into the French traveler meetup).

** Next week Thursday, May 12th we’ll be having our last AMVIV meeting, 6:30pm at The Clubhouse – to cover all of the last minute plans.

*We’ve got a couple different brunch offerings for you this Sunday, May 1:

First is our standing invitation from Shakespeare’s Grille & Pub
Several of us went over there a couple weekends ago, and it’s a great place. Good food, drink specials (two for one mimosa/Bloody Marys) and a nice location. Their website has a schedule of events, and they include Mini Cooper Sundays - this is a weekly invite to Mini Coopers in the valley (new and classic) to come and hang out for the day. Brunch usually goes until about 2pm.
Second is an invite we received from Katrina for a Royal Wedding Celebration
Katrina is hosting a Royal Wedding Celebration on Sunday May 1st at Garfield’s Restaurant at The Lakes, 2620 Regatta Drive, Suite 118. Members of the Sin City MINI Club and the British Motor Club will be invited. It is going to be a dressy brunch, with champagne and wedding cake. They will show video of the wedding , and have a Royal Fancy Dress Up event. Dress for the occasion will be Uniform, Morning Coat or Lounge Suit. The approximate cost will be $10 per person which will include cake and champagne and the members will order off a really nice brunch menu. If a formal brunch is more your speed, contact Katrina and see about getting added to the guest list - [email protected] or 702-217-9951

*For those of you wanting to help out with AMVIV, our next planning meeting will be on Thursday, May 5, 6:30pm, at The Clubhouse – 4803 Mojave Rd.

*Monthly visit to Cars and Coffee is scheduled for Saturday May 7, 8am – 11am. Cars and Coffee™ Las Vegas details at Stop by The Madhouse for coffee ahead of time at Eastern and Pebble, and support a SCMC Member business

*Speaking of AMVIV – THAT is almost here. May 19-22. Many, many thanks to those of you who have volunteered some of your time to help with this great event. Many of you have also registered to join in on the festivities. If you’d just like to see what is happening over the weekend, check out the schedule, here’s the link.

*Earlier this month, I sent you some information about the 4th Annual Anthem Country Club Car Show and BBQ on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19. This looks like it could be a fun event for the Club! If you’d like to register your MINI or Mini for the show, email me at [email protected] and I can email you the registration form.

*You might recall, I told you about a group of Classic Mini owners coming to the United States from France with their Minis to cruise along Route 66, from coast to coast. They are due to arrive in Las Vegas, the evening of May 8th. We’re thinking about having a special Motor In with them during their time in Vegas – specifically Monday evening, May 9th, possibly at Shakespeare’s. They’ll be in town until May 10th when they head for California. If you want their complete Western schedule, email me at [email protected].

Club Update for 4/15

First off – we have a bit of a conflict with our planned Route 66 Fun Run for April 30th. For those of you that don’t know, The Laughlin River Run is one of the biggest annual motorcycle rallies in Nevada. Our scheduled run and the Laughlin River Run are the same weekend. Oatman will probably be overrun with bikers on that Saturday. We might be rescheduling our April 30th run to just go to Kingman for the car show, or may put in a stop in Chloride, and avoid the Laughlin areas. Or we might just pick a different weekend entirely, so that the run would still be a test run for the AMVIV run. We will keep you posted on this. Of course, we can still go the planned route, and just deal with all the motorcycles when we stop. After all, its a Saturday - what else do we have to do? It would make the drive interesting. If any of you have any thoughts on this, we’d be happy to hear them.

Next up, one of our members sent me an email this week about the Shakespeare’s Grille and Pub in Henderson, 790 Coronado Center Dr. #130. On their schedule of events, they include Mini Cooper Sundays. This is a weekly invite to Mini Coopers in the valley (new and classic) to come and hang out for the day. They’ll be open for brunch, with special brunch prices and drink specials. I’ll be headed over this Sunday to see what it’s all about, if you’ve got some time, let’s do brunch.

Our next Motor In will be Wednesday, April 20, 6:30pm, at Grind Burger, 360 E Tropicana. Here’s a link to their menu:

Our next AMVIV Planning Meeting is Thursday, April 21, 6:30pm at The Clubhouse, 4803 Mojave Road.

Remember that group of French Classic Mini Coopers heading to the US to cruise Route 66? This trip is planned for 3 weeks. Thursday, April 21 to Sunday, May 15, 2011. I have the Western portion of their itinerary - if you’d like it, let me know. I thought it might be fun if the Club met up with them during their trip, either to ride along for a while along their route or just around Vegas – or maybe just to have a meal or something.

For those of you interested in special edition MINIs, MINI is producing the MINI Clubman Hampton Design. See the MINI Clubman Hampton later this month at Desert MINI of Las Vegas, or get a sneak peak in The Desert MINI Lounge on Facebook.

Have you heard about the new Fiat 500, and their marketing efforts attempt to compare it to the MINI Cooper? If you don’t follow them as regularly as you might like, White Roof Radio talked about this on their show this week. If you’d like to catch both sides of this argument, check out their podcast on iTunes, or follow this weblink for Woofcast #375:

Interested in a custom license plate frame? Please check out this web site Several of the designs fit and look great on the Mini Coopers. He said he’d be glad to design a custom frame for our group and forgo a design fee with a minimum order of 10 (shipping will be less that way too). They would also make great gifts or awards, if we were so inclined. Let me know if any of you are interested.

SCMC Run April 3 - Back to Furnace Creek

This month the SCMC was invited to join Cars and Coffee on their April Cruise, Sunday, April 3 - The Death Valley and Furnace Creek Brunch drive. Hoping for some better weather this time around. If we’re lucky, all the rain will create a beautiful palate of wild flowers along our route through the deserted roads of the majestic Death Valley. We will end the cruise for a scrumptious brunch at the world famous Furnace Creek Resort ( ). The cost of the brunch is about $22 plus tax and gratuity. We will depart promptly from the Gas station on the SE corner of 159 and 160 (Blue Diamond) at 8:30 AM. Please arrive early so we have our driver’s meeting at 8:45 AM. After brunch, we can decide within our own MINI group when we’d like to head back.

Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to come.
