AMVIV Volunteer Dinner

AMVIV isn’t done until we have our dinner and thank everyone for helping out. According to EVERY attendee I spoke to, this AMVIV was spectacularly successful, and a very large part of that is do to the hard work of everyone in the club who stepped up and stuffed bags, worked a booth, or led a run. From myself and the rest of the AMVIV planning committee, we want to say a hearty THANK YOU and WELL DONE!

Now on to the party. As is tradition, the club is hosting a party for the volunteers. If you worked at the event or at the bag stuffing or were a member of the planning committee, this party is for you and a guest.

We recognize this is short notice, but the Club will be hosting a cookout next Saturday, June 4, 2:00pm at Pedro’s house. The address is: 287 Hampton Ridge Ct, Henderson NV 89002.

All we ask is that you RSVP as soon as possible so we can get a head count so we know how much food to buy.

Please RSVP to Julie ([email protected])

SCMC Board of Directors Request for Nominees!

Sin City MINI Club Members,
The time has arrived to elect a new Board of Directors.

The elections will be a two part process.

First we need to see who is interested in being on the Board this year. You can self-nominate, or if there is someone you would like to nominate, please contact them to ask if they are interested. We will take nominations until Tuesday, May 31. If you don’t have your nominee’s contact information, I can pass along your request to them and find out if they are interested.

Once we have the complete list, the elections will begin. At that time, current members of the Club will be sent a list of the nominees and will be asked to select up to 5 names and to email your official vote to member who is not a nominee. This person will relay the name of the voter to the membership chair who will validate the ballot. You must be a paid member to vote per the by-laws. As some of you might recall, memberships expire every February. There are 34 of you who have not renewed your membership. Some of you volunteered during AMVIV and are due a refund in return for your help during the event. If you would like us to deduct your renewal from this refund or want to know the status of your membership, let us know.

Voting for the Board will be from June 1 through June 10. Winners of the election will be announced that weekend at our annual meeting, date, time and place to be announced later.

So – here it is… the first step. Please send your nominations for the new board to [email protected] no later than May 31.

AMVIV8 Event Wrap Up

Well, AMVIV has been and gone. A great time with great friends, both old and new. My deepest thanks to all the planners and volunteers that helped out this year. If the comments are to be believed - you helped make this year’s AMVIV the best yet. I know there were times over the past few months where some of us were trying very hard not to pull our hair out - but the end result was more than any of us expected.

A special thanks to Karen for her tireless work for the Vendor Setup and Mixer - and the Party at The Palace. She took my ideas and ran with them and WOW! what a great time! Also to Lisa for the great awards… and to Chris and Lisa for making sure my special treasures from Victoria’s Secret were presented to the MINI community with such panache. ;) Also to Mike and Manny - the car show went great and all told we raised roughly $1050 for S.A.F.E. House. Not too shabby. More thanks to Agro, Conny, Pedro and Ross: none of it would have happened without you!

I’ve posted a final wrap on the AMVIV page, if you’d like to read more about this year’s event - please follow this link.

Normal Club activities will return, as soon as the ‘platoon’ catches up on their sleep. Thanks again everyone!!!

A MINI Vacation In Vegas 8 Is Here

After months of meetings and preparation, the time has finally come. The festivities start today at 3pm when Registration for AMVIV8 opens.

Many of you volunteered to help during the weekend, for which we are grateful. The Club booth will be located in the Motoring Midway, on the 5th floor of the parking garage - with all of the vendors. If you are new to the MINI community or have some free time on your hands this weekend, feel free to drop by anytime. This is perfect time to see what sorts of products and services are available to you. And if you wanted to help with the booth - there could be an opportunity for that as well. As with anything, people’s schedules can change at the last minute and sometimes folks can’t be there as scheduled. Also, if you want to slip in and give someone a break to catch a bite to eat, I am sure they would welcome the respite.

For those of you looking to go on some runs, there are four scheduled during the weekend all leaving from the roof of the parking garage at Palace Station: Oatman/Kingman on Thursday leaving at 8am, Death Valley on Friday leaving at 8:30am and the infamous Strip Cruise leaves at 7:30pm, Charleston on Saturday leaving at 1pm, and Amboy on Sunday leaving at 9am.

There is an early bird Slots Tournament for attendees tonite starting at 7:30pm, and on Friday there is a Poker Tournament for attendees starting at 3:00pm.

Saturday morning from 8am-11am Cars and Coffee, 9500 S Eastern Ave., is hosting the annual all MINI Show and Shine Benefit Car Show for S.A.F.E. House. Saturday evening will bring the Main Event - The Party At The Palace.

Finally, on Sunday there will be an SCCA Autocross starting at 7am, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Dirt Track Paddock, also known as the U-Drift location. Sunday brunch at Shakespeare’s Grille & Bar at 9:30 is also on the agenda.

I know the weather looks a little wonky, but I think that wind is blowing the cold and nastiness away. I read that the weekend is supposed to be FINE!

We’ve got folks coming to town from all over the country in their shiny MINIs - Alaska, Kansas, Florida, Connecticut, Mississippi, Illinois, Minnesota, North and South Carolina, Washington, Oregon, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Wyoming, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona; even a few from Canada. Come on down and say Hi!

Au Revoir

I just wanted to send a big thank you to everyone that came out last night - Pedro & John, Jeffrey & Annette (and that beautiful Camero SS), Dave & Chris, Bill & Katrina, and Lisa. We met with some of the French party for dinner at The M Resort/Casino. The visitors really liked the Camaro - real American muscle isn’t as prevalent over there, and they enjoyed the treat.

As luck would have it, flexibility was the order of the evening. We met up on the rooftop and of course the weather was iffy. Then we went inside to the buffet, and they couldn’t accommodate us as quickly as we needed so our group wandered over to the Hash House A Go Go. Anyone that has eaten there knows the portion sizes are comparable to buffet size, so it wasn’t too much of a departure. The food was great, if a little plentiful - and I think everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the crab cakes and they were yummy!!

Afterward, Jeffrey and the Camaro performed a little bit for us on that great big rooftop, and the French enjoyed that immensely. Of course, so did we! Afterward a few of us took our visitors back to The Stratosphere. We cruised down to Town Square to explore the area a bit, then up The Strip to enjoy the lights and sights.

What an incredible story they’ll have to tell their friends when they return home on Saturday! They are off to Death Valley today and eventually will make their way down to Long Beach to put the classics back into containers to make the long trip back to France. They wanted me to tell everyone they had a great time meeting us and hope someday to come out again.

Thank you again to everyone that came out these past two days. It was a lot of fun!!

French Classic Minis in Las Vegas

I have been emailing you about this for months - and finally ils sont arrivés (they have arrived!) We had some fun yesterday with our French classic Mini owner visitors… They tell me they are having a great visit, riding along Route 66 and seeing our country. We met them at Kelso Dunes, and had a blast swapping car keys and tearing up the road. Those little cars are soooo much fun!!! But then, we knew that Thanks to Nancy, Toni, Jennifer, and Karen for making the trip out with me.

After that, we rode to Baker and had Gyros and shakes at The Mad Greek and bought some lottery tickets. Then we rode to Vegas along the 1-15, watching the crazy traffic headed back to California – isn’t it so ice that they come every weekend to deposit their cash? Ha ha ha

When we got to Primm, we met more MINIs from the SCMC and caravanned into Sloan. A big shout out to Pedro & John, Tom, Lisa, and Julius & Crystal: they weathered that crazy Sunday highway traffic, brave souls! In Sloan we met Annette, Jeffrey and Monty (one of our Club Classics) along the very windswept Las Vegas Blvd and did The Strip Cruise. So much fun! I think there were 12 of us by that time and we didn’t lose anyone on the Cruise. Even managed to stop at the Welcome sign for a quick picture before moving along. Sometimes things workout better when no planning is involved. Who knew? Later that evening, we went to Queen Victoria’s Pub at The Riviera and had a cocktail before taking them back to their hotel. A good time was had by all.

Today is their last day in town. They are at Hoover Dam now, and will be going to Lake Mead for a picnic. After that they plan to continue tourist duties and do a sort of casino crawl down The Strip. I will be joining them, and Facebooking if anyone is in the neighborhood, perhaps we can hook up.

Tonight for dinner is a little different than previously reported. They had mentioned doing BBQ for dinner, but that means something a little bit different to them, than to us. We think of going out for BBQ at a restaurant. They think go to the grocery store, buy the meat and fixings and have a cook out. So… no BBQ.

Instead, at 7pm we will be meeting on the rooftop of the parking garage at the M Casino, and going to their buffet. I believe the cost is $23 per person, plus tax and gratuity ($17 for children, and free for kids under 5) … There are 12 people in their party. I plan to call the M today to let them know we are coming. I could really use an RSVP from anyone interested in joining them for dinner, so let me know

SCMC News for 5/6

** A MINI Vacation In Vegas 8 (AMVIV8 for short) is almost here! Our bag stuffing event is next weekend, Saturday, May 14, starting at 9:00am at The Clubhouse, 4803 Mojave Drive. This is where we stuff the attendee registration and vendor goodie bags. If you have the time, we could really use all hands for this one. The more Club members come in to help, the faster the morning goes. We’ll be having bagels and coffee for breakfast, and pizza for lunch. For those of you curious about the schedule of events for the weekend – here’s the link: http://www.amviv.com/schedule/

** French Classic Mini Visitors – World Mini Raid are almost here! There is a group of French travelers, who brought their Minis over from Europe to drive Route 66 from coast to coast. They are set to arrive in Vegas on this Sunday May 8th at about 6pm. Their schedule indicates they will be leaving needles at 8am and here is the rest of their day:
- 9:45-10:15 : Kelso Dunes
- 12:00-1:30 : Pic-nic at Hole in the Wall
- 4:15-4:45 : Gas station at Statelin Service (near the Nothern exit of Mojave National Preserve)
- 5:30 : arrival at Las Vegas Blvd
- 6:00 : arrival at our hotel (Stratosphere)
I am thinking about meeting them at Needles at 8am… or maybe Kelso at 9:45am and was curious if anyone was available and interested in joining me. Looks like they’ll be having dinner at Roxy’s Diner (Stratosphere) on Sunday night but wanting some BBQ on Monday night. In considering budget (I imagine this has been an expensive trip for them), I would like to setup dinner on Monday evening at Famous Dave’s on Blue Diamond. We could meet them at the Stratosphere and perhaps take a ride up The Strip with all of our Minis and MINIs to get to Blue Diamond and Famous Dave’s . Let me know if you are interested, as I will need to call the restaurant ahead of time to let them how many people are coming.

** Toni let me know that Nellis Air Force is hosting a F-22 Raptor public visit this weekend, if folks are interested in checking it out, we can go from Cars and Coffee. Just let me know if this sounds interesting to you, so I can pass along a number of interested folks to Toni.

** This weekend we have our regular activities on the schedule: Our monthly Cars and Coffee stop on Saturday morning, and brunch on Sunday at Shakespeare’s (if you’re not into the French traveler meetup).

** Next week Thursday, May 12th we’ll be having our last AMVIV meeting, 6:30pm at The Clubhouse – to cover all of the last minute plans.
